Tips for Exhibitions

Photographing Your Artwork

When you apply for an exhibition opportunity at the APS Gallery your images are key! Not only are your images of your artwork looked at by curators and industry professionals but if you are successful they are used to advertise the show. Your images will be used on social media, the APS Gallery website and in the media – so the images you submit of your artwork need to be high quality!

Here are some helpful tips for photographing your artwork:

  • Your image files must be JPG, TIFF or PNG
  • Your image needs to be at least 1.5MB
  • Please only include the artwork in the image, we do not need to see the mount or frame.
  • Please do not photograph your artwork behind glass. This causes reflections and we cannot see your amazing artwork.
  • If submitting sculpture please use a neutral background and send us multiple images from different angles.
  • Please title your artwork in the following format: artwork_title_your_name (eg. Purple_world_alex_smith)

Submitting Your Artwork for the Print It! Book

If you are submitting a portrait image for the Print It! exhibition please bear in mind that only a section of the image will be printed in the book.

Writing an Artist Biography

The below questions are provided to assist individual artists in creating an artist biography.
Feel free to pick and choose which questions you answer. When writing your biography please write in 3rd person and try to write no more than 150 words.

  • WHAT DO YOU MAKE?: If it’s not clear from your title, say what you make. For example:
    artist books, installations, oil paintings.
  • ISSUES/THEMES/SUBJECTS: Does your work address certain themes or subjects?
  • MEDIUM: If you use a medium you haven’t mentioned yet, mention it here. Perhaps you
paint in acrylic or your medium is plastic. See how this detail matters?
  • PROCESS: Some have a process that’s unusual. A papermaker uses banana pulp, a
multimedia artist that uses found objects or a painter that uses beeswax to create
texture. Describing a unique process makes you stand out.
  • SPECIALTY: Maybe you have a specialty regarding the way you work, your subject matter
or something else that you haven’t mentioned yet.
  • ACCOLADES: Where has your work been read, seen or experienced? This is where you let
someone know your level of expertise

Is Your Artwork Gallery Ready?

The gallery has a hanging system which is used to hang the artwork on the wall.

  • Here is an example of the hooks we use: https://www.hangingsystems.com/products/stas-zipper-up-to-15kg
  • Please use D-Rings and string on the back of your artwork. Screw the d-rings around a third of the height from the top of the image and make sure the string is taught and cannot be seen above the image.
  • Please label your artwork on the back with the following details: title, medium, price and artist name.
  • If abstract, please can you put arrows on the back to indicate which way round the artwork should be.
